Chef’s Pencil has released its annual rankings of the best culinary schools in the world. Culinary schools are a great starting point for a successful culinary career and provide the technical tools required to perform in this very competitive industry. They also prepare chefs for the mental discipline necessary to perform well under extreme pressure and stress.

Let’s take a look at the top 10.

1. Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts, USA

This school has campuses located in Boulder, Colorado, and Austin, Texas.  At its various campuses, this accredited school offers diploma and degree programs specializing in culinary and pastry arts education. 

The school encourages students to respect local resources and sustainable practices as well as teaching them where the foods they prepare come from according to the farm-to-table philosophy. Financial aid is available for those who fit the criteria depending on the campus and program they are interested in. 

2. Culinary Arts Academy, Switzerland

Reputed to be one of the best culinary schools in the world, the Culinary Arts Academy has two campuses located in Lucerne and Le Bouveret, Switzerland. As a member of the Swiss Academy Group, the school equips students for a future career journey with an emphasis on entrepreneurship and kitchen skills. The Academy offers courses that range from one-term education courses to three-year Bachelor’s education programs. 

3. Culinary Institute Of America, USA

This culinary school which is reputed to be the first of its kind in the U.S. (established in 1946 in downtown New Haven) has campuses situated in Hyde Park, NY, San Antonio, TX, Napa, CA, and in Singapore. 

A variety of programs are offered for food and wine lovers lasting from just a couple of hours to a multi-day boot camp. The Culinary Arts at Greystone has a 21-month course that is divided into four semesters and has a tuition rate of $13,230 each.

4. Le Cordon Bleu, Paris, France

This school has numerous campuses spread across different geographical locations including Paris, France, London, UK, Ottawa, Canada, Bangkok, Thailand, and Sydney, Australia. 

They offer a variety of programs ranging from pastry and confectionary, gastronomy & nutrition to online learning of a variety of culinary specialization.

5. The Institute of Culinary Education, New York, USA

This award-winning school has campus locations in New York, NY and Los Angeles, California. It offers programs such as Culinary Arts, Pastry and Baking Arts, Culinary Management, and Hospitality Management. Over 1,500 classes are held each year, covering every interest and skill.

6. Apicius, Italy

This school of hospitality is located in Florence, Italy and largely adheres to an academic structure of workshops, lectures, and seminars. It will also interest you to know that the school has its own pastry shop where students’ work is showcased.

Courses in Baking and Pastry; Culinary Arts; Dietetics and Nutrition; Food and Culture; Food, Family, and Consumer Sciences; Wine and Culture; and Wine Expertise are offered by the School of Food and Wine Studies. Also, the School of Hospitality offers Hospitality and Tourism Management; Hotel and Lodging Management; Restaurant, Food, and Beverage Management; and Spa Management.

7. Westminster Kingsway College, London, UK

Known for its excellence in Culinary Arts and Hospitality, this school is situated in the center of London operating across four campuses including King’s Cross Centre, Victoria Centre, Soho Centre, and Regent’s Park Centre.

They offer a myriad of programs that favor teens and adults. A five-week Saturday course includes everything the young chef will need  and is £100 per person. There is also a culinary degree with fees of around £9,000 and a patisserie degree for around £8,500.

8. Kendall College, School of Culinary Arts, IL, USA

This school of culinary arts situated in the center of Chicago builds students not only in the culinary arts but also in business management and communication abilities within its three programs: Culinary Arts, Baking & Pastry, and Hospitality Management.

The school offers a four-year degree program where students practice cooking a range of world cuisines as well as gaining real-world experience via an internship at a Chicago restaurant. Financial aid is also offered to students from different backgrounds to ensure the College remains accessible.

9. BHMS, Lucerne, Switzerland

This Business and Hotel Management School located in Lucerne offers students the training necessary to work in a real food production kitchen via hands-on training and classroom learning.

They offer a 3-year course which gives students the specialized knowledge needed to own their own culinary or catering business. The tuition fee is around 32,000 SFR per year.

10. New England Culinary Institute, Montpelier, USA

This institute situated in the city of Vermont offers degrees that require paid internships over a period in addition to residency on campus. It offers both Associate and Bachelor’s degrees. 

Associate degrees are available for Culinary Arts, Baking and Pastry Arts, and Hospitality and Restaurant Management, while Bachelor’s degrees are available for Culinary Arts and Hospitality and Restaurant Management. Also, certificate options are made accessible for Professional Cooking, Baking, and Pastry.

  2. European and American Culinary Colleges are very good …have good infrastructure, good faculty and huge campuses. But one has to also keep in mind they come with big fee tag. In this scenario we need tell the prospective students who would like to take up a culinary career about other available more economical courses, colleges and countries……This is where the Asian Countries come into play….they might not match European and American Standards but are also good. One can explore these options provided some professional or Culinary Organisation make a list of top Culinary Colleges from Asia which can be relied on.
