Chef Floyd Cardoz, tragically passed away due to complications due to coronavirus in New Jersey at the age of 59.
The news of the innovative Indian chef’s passing has shocked the world of gastronomy and brought home the threat of the disease.
Cardoz was an immensely talented chef who combined regional Indian cuisine with French and American flavours, bringing the incredible culinary traditions of the subcontinent into the American consciousness, to American fine dining and into Americans’ homes.
The loss of Cardoz is keenly felt across the industry and the public at large who had grown used to the chef’s appearances on US television on shows such as Bravo’s ‘Top Chef Masters’.
Cardoz was born in what was then Bombay and grew up between the city and his ancestral home of Goa. He took up cooking against the wishes of his family and trained in India and Switzerland, before moving to New York, where he opened innovative fusion restaurant Tabla with Danny Meyer.
It was hugely successful and launched Cardoz’s career as a luminary culinary talent. He opened more restaurants in New York and Mumbai.
Chef Cardoz was known as a prodigiously talented chef with an uncompromising drive for excellence. He was also gregarious, warm and generous. He will continue to be missed by those who knew him as well as the general public.
