On Friday May 25, when the city party-goers in Mumbai was gearing up to celebrate last weekend of May 2018, in Ark Deck Bar didn’t know about the upcoming crisis.
Around 7:15 PM on May 25, Ark Deck Bar, the floating restaurant in Mumbai, sank in the sea near Bandra-Worli sea link.
The ship-turned-restaurant was launched in January 2018 to give Mumbai’s food lovers something new in terms of food and ambiance, along with generous views of Mumbai’s skyline. Unfortunately this 5-month-old, sea-based restaurant in Mumbai couldn’t withstand the whims of weather and sea currents.
According to reports, the restaurant authorities had planned to temporarily shut-down the restaurant owing to Mumbai’s heavy monsoons, but the restaurant became a prey to choppy currents even before the monsoon could set in. The Maharashtra Maritime Board officials told the press that the anchor latched on to Ark Deck Bar slipped from its actual place due to the force of unforeseen sea currents and ended up hitting a rock. Buzz also has it that the anchor lost its grip probably due to the tidal waves of the cyclone.
Fortunately, no severe casualties have been reported in this accident; though a few people on-board at the time of incident have survived with minor injuries. Those who were there on-board (15 in number) were timely rescued and brought on safe shore.
For people who are missing Ark Deck Bar, there are two more restaurants in Mumbai, AB Celestial and Mumbai Maiden that are in engaged in the same business. But, with the onset of monsoon, they, too, will take to the shore until the sea currents become favourable again.
