The famous ‘Dabbawalas’ of Mumbai are known for their undying spirit apart from being extremely punctual as they work even during the extreme weather of Mumbai.
After their very new venture of delivering organic vegetables to Mumbaikars, they could soon be seen delivering couriers and parcels in addition to their current job of delivering tiffins in the city. The spokesperson of Mumbai Dabbawala Association Subhash Talekar said, they are about to finalise the new project to deliver parcels within the city. This will open up new avenues for the people as well as the delivery service. “It will take about two weeks to lock the project down, as we are working out some details amongst the members. The rates are yet to be decided.” Talekar told media.
“The main aim of this project is to increase the income of our members. In free time they can opt for this as we can deliver in shortest possible time as compared to companies involved in this area,” Talekar said. He added that their core business is delivering the tiffins but will also focus on new business ventures such as delivering couriers and parcels.
Talekar said that they were in talks for association with a company and that the association also will be developing a mobile app for the purpose to trace and track the parcels. “We have done a few trials and will be training more of our people on this service.” he said.
To generate more income, he said the association has already tied up with some of e-commerce platforms to deliver their products and also undertake branding and advertising activities. The ‘Dabbawalas’ primarily use local trains and bicycles to deliver tiffins, mainly in offices.
